I couldn’t find our little Roku remote. Happens about four times a day. I asked Mary to help me find it, with the promise of turning on an annoying kid show. She helped me by saying,

“Where was the last place you had it, Mom? Do you remember where you saw it last? Maybe if you picked up the big messes around here you would find it. Such a disaster.”

Wow. Think I’ve said these things to her?!

I love that she can talk so much now, but dang, does that sting! And makes me laugh a little.

Toddler talk

Mary: Did it hurted you when you pushed John out?

(That was completely out of the blue, and after that she asked how I pushed him out. I am not read to discuss these things with a 4-year-old!)

Clare: (holding a doll) She’s my baby. I’m the mommy.
Me: What’s your favorite part of being a mommy?
Clare: Umm. Giving gummies!

(Guess getting gummy vitamins truly is the highlight of her life)

Mary: Are these snickerdoodle muffins cousins with mushrooms?

Clare: (standing in front of the toilet, pants down, with TP tucked between her butt cheeks, like a tail) I’m a puppy. Ruff!

For the love of pee

Motherhood is so full of ups and downs. And tonight, mine revolved around urine. Clare, who’s been fantastically potty-trained for a couple months, decided to “pee like Daddy”, and standing in front of the toilet didn’t work out too well. Geez. Then Mary wet their bed just now, but managed to keep it on her side, and I managed to change the sheets without even waking Clare. I feel like Supermom.

This whole “fall back” crap is kicking my ass. Or maybe it’s my whole philosophy of baby/child-led-sleeping. That is so kicking my ass, for sure. The more kids we have, the harder it is to have them get the sleep they need because they’re so dependent on us to get to sleep.

In her four years of life, I’ve never seen Mary so cranky and fussy as she’s been the last couple hours. Holy good gravy. It’s also not been my shining moment. I don’t know how to cope with her. She’s four and she’s crying and crying and crying and won’t take a nap. So I’m yelling and yelling and yelling and that doesn’t help.

Now she’s lying in her bed quietly and holding my hand. I love that she often holds my hand to go to sleep, but I now have more kids than hands. Currently, the other two are entertaining themselves in the living room. Surely I can trust a two-year-old with her baby brother, right?

Fall Back

My first maternity leave ended about four years ago. Mary was 16 weeks old, and I went back to Target part-time.

I’m about to go back to Target part-time again. John’s 17 weeks old today, and as soon as my background check gets cleared, I imagine we’ll be picking a start date.

It wasn’t a tough decision to go back to chain retail. I’m still a little anxious, and will really miss some of my relief jobs, but it’s the right time for this.

Hi, Stephanie

I am so inconsistent with blogging. Obviously a lot has happened since my last post. John was born. Labor was fast and furious, and it’s amazing how much nicer it feels to not be pregnant. I’ll take post-partum recovery any day over the 9 months prior.

John’s my first baby to take a bottle, so I returned to working at just 4 weeks. Kind of crazy, but we really did ease into it, and I’m actually about to go back to working part-time at my old pharmacy. I was kind of astonished to realize I am working nearly 20 hours a week, so might as well get better pay and benefits. Life is expensive. Well, really, tuition is, and now we have two kids in Catholic preschool and one husband getting his Masters. I’m happy I can help pay for all that, and excited to finally start saving again. We still want to move in a year or two, and we need a down payment.

Mark’s headed home from work, so I’ll post a few recent pics from my iPad and start watching a show before he commandeers the TV and chooses something lame. 🙂

back to blogging?

I just got an ipad mini (super fun!) and we bought a laptop recently too, for Mark to type his grad school papers. I’m thinking it’s time to get back into blogging. Kinda ironic, because I’m actually sitting at our desktop to type this now!

Anyways. Here are some random things:

– Mary is pretty hilarious. Yesterday in particular she made me laugh a lot. First she asked, “How do you say llama in Spanish?” I have no idea where she got that, neither does Mark, but it probably has something to do with Dora. She couldn’t explain anything when I questioned her. Later, she was putting on her swimsuit and farted a couple times, so I asked “Do you have the toots?” She replied, with a big grim, “I think my tooter’s trying to say, ‘I’m hungry!'”. And at the dinner table, she tried out a new joke: “Have you ever seen a bean burrito…..on a sandwich??” I was thankful it didn’t involve poop or pee like most of her jokes do.

– Getting closer to baby John’s arrival. I think it’d be great if he arrived on June 25th (Mark’s bday), but I also think it’d be okay if he waited until his due date of July 8th.  I just realized that I get paid time and a half for holidays at Target, so I accepted a shift on the fourth of July. I’ll cancel if I can’t work, but if I can, might as well make some bank, eh?

– Mark and I trained to be Billings Ovulation Method teacher (a form of Natural Family Planning). It’s been a month, and we have not gotten the ball rolling with actually starting our ministry. Excuses include being super busy with both of us working, not being able to meet up with our priest about our plan of action, and yada yada yada. I’m super excited about it, though, and think making a powerpoint about the theology and Church’s teachings will be my favorite part!

– My whole extended family will be going on vacation in a month. I’m naively not nervous about a long drive with three little kids, and think it’s fun we’re all getting matching tshirts. We’re just gonna hang out in some cabins and be pretty relaxed.

– We still haven’t actually tried to fit three car seats across our car’s bench seat. If it doesn’t work, I guess we’ll be buying a minivan next week 😉
